Since time immemorial fashion has
been an integral part of our life. Fashion has been changing trends at every
stage but there are certain things that have not taken a backseat ever. Crochet
work has always been present in our fashion world. Crocheting is a technique of
creating fabric from yarn, thread, or other material strands using a
crochet hook. Crocheting like knitting consists of pulling loops of material
through other loops but it also uses the working material or thread at the same
time by wrapping it around the hook one or more times.
Crochet in the fashion world
Crochet is different from
knitting as in the former a hook is used whereas in the latter, work is done
with the help of two needles. Crochet is a French word. Crocheting gained
popularity during the 19th century in Europe. In the earlier days crochet laces
were made in different vibrant colours. Fashions in crochet changed by the end
of 19th century. It slowly became more elaborate in texture and more intricate
stitches were introduced. More work was done in white or off white threads,
except for fancy purses, which were often crocheted in bright coloured threads
using beads to beautify these. Over the years crocheting is used to make tapestry
,table linen, laces to be used for dresses and for making jackets , tunics etc.
Besides, this form of thread work has also been prevalent in the Indian fashion
industry also. Crochet designs are also used for making colourful doilies,
potholders and other home items. A very popular design is the granny squares, a
motif worked in the round and incorporating bright pieces of cloth in it.
Crocheting can also be done as an extension of any dress and to beautify it in
turn. Crochet bags in varied materials are extremely popular and add colour to
any ladies wardrobe and accessories.
How to Crochet?
Basic materials required for crochet
are a hook and the material that will be crocheted like common yarn, thread or
wool. The crochet hook can be made of many materials and comes in many sizes.
Hooks can be made of bone, bamboo, aluminium, plastic and steel. The size of
the hook is determined by the diameter of the hook’s shaft. The worker or the
person crocheting selects the hook depending on the size of the stitch
required. Steel crochet hooks range in size from 0.4 to 3.5 mm. These
kind of hooks are used for fine crochet work such as doilies and lace. The yarn
or the thread that is to be used for crocheting is determined by the design and
the utility of the finished product. Patterns and motifs are a bit rough with
thicker yarns like wool and produce bold designs. On the other hand thinner
yarns are suitable for fine and delicate laces and patterns.
Crocheting is a wonderful
example of handwork or thread work which is used to bring out the designers
creativity and skill.
