Properties - Uses of Carbon

Properties of carbon fibre:

Tensile strength - 1.80 to 2.40KN/mm²
Breaking extension - 0.5%
Density - 1.95 Gms/cm³
Stiffness - 350 - 410 KN/mm²
Elastic properties - Load / extension curve almost linear to break
Specific gravity - 1.75 to 1.85%
Effect of moisture - Nil
Effect of micro organisms - Nil
Effect of sunlight Nil
Effect of chemical solvent - Good resistance
Hot air oxidation - Causes some corrosion
Strong oxidizing agent

Eg . Sodium Hypochlorite



Carbon Fibre Uses:
  1. Aircraft breaks and engines.
  2. Space vehicle.
  3. Fishing rods, boats and submarines.
  4. Pressure vessels in chemical and allied industries.
  5. Protective fabrics.
